The Art of Focus by Amishi Jha

In The Art of Focus, Dr. Amishi Jha shows listeners how to focus without struggle and maintain peak performance. As the top complaint of meditators and all of us, distraction is a top cause of stress. To combat distraction, Amishi has studied the effects of meditation on professionals in high-stress occupations, including elite athletes, military personnel, and first responders. He has also studied how meditation affects people in high-stress jobs, such as firefighters and police.

Research

Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami. Her research examines the brain-based mechanisms that maintain active working memory. Working memory is a complex cognitive process that allows us to manipulate information while preserving its relevance. One technique Jha uses to study this process is single-unit recordings in nonhuman primates. These recordings have shown that sustained firing of population neurons in working memory is a crucial component of information maintenance.

Book

Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology and neuroscientist at the University of Miami. His book, Peak Mind, is published by HarperOne. He specializes in the basis of attention, working memory, and mindfulness training. He also serves on the board of Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and Frontiers in Psychology. His research interests include mindfulness, the neuroscience of attention, and the benefits of meditation and mindfulness based training.
